It occurred to me recently that as I spend a lot of time working on my computer, my machine’s speed and performance is very important to me. As a result I try to keep my computer in tip top condition.
This is quite easy for me but for anyone without any technical skills at all, I have put together this basic article to help you keep your computer running smooth and quick.
If you are using the internet a great deal or have someone else in your household who does it is very important to keep your firewall and antivirus software up to date. To do this click on “start” then “control panel” then double click automatic updates then highlight the automatic choice then click “apply” then click “OK.”
Again click start then control panel then windows firewall then insure the “ON” button is highlighted and click “apply.”
Next you should delete the temporary internet files and also clear your browser history. To do this click start then control panel then internet options go to the general tab hit the delete button.
Next run the defragmenter. Click start than “all programs” then “accessories” then “system tools” then “disk defragmenter.” Running this program may take up to a couple of hours depending on how long it has been since it was last run.
Next empty your recycle bin; this should be done on a regular basis.
Next run Scan Disc; click “start” then “my computer” then right click “local disc (c)” then “properties” the click the “tools” tab then click on “Check now” again this may take some time to run.
Now restart your computer and it should be running smoothly and quickly.
There are free tools and expensive tools that you can download online to do all these processes for you. It is not difficult to do a search for any of these.
